San Xavier del Bac was founded by Father Kino, the celebrated Jesuit missionary and explorer. "Bac", a Tohono O'odham word meaning "place where the water appears," refers to the area near the mission where the Santa Cruz River resurfaces after running underground.
The Pima Indians defended San Xavier with their lives against fierce Apache attacks, and mass is still celebrated there to this day. The structure's white walls, parapets and domes are highlighted by the muted tones of the surrounding desert and mountains.
