MONASTERIO DE PIEDRA: (Zaragoza - Spain)
Monasterio de Piedra (Monastery of the Rock) is a monastery, hotel and park complex located in Spain, in the region of Aragon, Zaragoza province. The monastery was founded in 1194 by thirteen Cistercian monks from Poblet Monastery, in an old castle next to the Piedra river, and was dedicated to St. Mary the Fair (Santa María la Blanca). The entire complex has been declared a national monument.
History
The monastery’s construction progressed in three architectural stages: Gothic (13th century), Renaissance Gothic (16C) and Classical-Baroque (18C).
Entrance through the walls was gained through the medieval keep; the church, destroyed in the early part of the 19th century, opened onto the cloister, noted for its great arches, and the various premises of the monastery. The beautiful chapter house (from the early 12th century) was the vital center of monastic life; the monks resided in the main building (17th century), which has today been converted into a quiet hotel. The Romanesque columns of the old abbatial residence support the current Neoclassical one, constructed in the 18th century.

Park
The Piedra river canyon in the vicinity of the monastery is a place of extreme natural beauty, a lush, garden-like environment of waterfalls, mosses and rivulets in the midst of an arid wilderness. A marked and fenced path winds its way through the course of the canyon, with overlooks of several waterfalls; the longest and most notable of these is the "Horsetail" (Cola del Caballo), at more than fifty meters high. These waterfalls are formed by the precipitation of dissolved limestone that occurs when the decreasing river level exposes rocks to sunshine; this results in water evaporation and deposits the limestone in successive layers through which the water runs, forming countless rivulets. Minor fluctuations in the river's own flow have resulted in the Karst topography of the region.
Access
Monasterio de Piedra is relatively isolated. It is located 118 km (70.8 mi) southwest of the city of Zaragoza; to reach it from there, one would take the A-2 in the direction of Madrid until Calatayud, and from there the A-202 to Nuévalos; the Monastery is located two kilometers beyond Nuévalos.

Escondido entre las abruptas sierras del Sistema Ibérico, situado en el término municipal de Nuévalos, en la provincia de Zaragoza, el parque natural del Monasterio de Piedra nos ofrece una de las experiencias más gratificantes que se pueden encontrar en el mundo, en un recorrido de dos horas y media por un vergel insólito en torno al agua y su movimiento en cascadas y grutas. Tal y como decía la acreditada revista inglesa Fraser’s Magazine, en un articulo publicado en el año 1871, es "una excursión a una de las curiosidades naturales más extraordinarias de Europa".
Lo abre el sol y lo cierra el sol:
"El efecto del sol poniente visto desde el interior de la caverna(la gruta de la Cola de Caballo) a través de la catarata, así como las sensaciones que despierta el conjunto del espectáculo, no pueden describirse"(Fraser’s Magazine, Septiembre 1871).
La corriente del río Piedra ha modelado la roca formando lagos, grutas y cascadas. Descubrirá hermosos parajes como el Lago del Espejo, pasando para llegar a él por la Peña del Diablo o la impresionante cascada de 50 m. de altura Cola de Caballo que oculta una espectacular gruta natural, la Gruta Iris; la cascada Trinidad, Los Chorreaderos, Baño de Diana, cascada Caprichosa, cascada Iris, Lago de los Patos, el Vergel.... indiscutiblemente el parque es la fantasía del agua , su magia se puede sentir a través de todos los sentidos: observar la belleza del paisaje, oír el canto de los pájaros, sentir el fluir del susurro de la caída del agua y pasear por un fantástico paraje romántico que nos transporta al siglo XIX, fecha en que D. Juan Federico Muntadas artífice y descubridor del parque y la gruta Iris, convirtiéndolo al parque natural en una visita obligada hasta nuestros días.
El parque acoge densos bosques de ribera, en uno de los ecosistemas de mayor riqueza biológica, donde se encuentran muchas especies de animales y plantas en un espacio relativamente reducido y gran variedad de árboles gigantescos.
A través de las salas de exposición y audiovisuales del Centro de Interpretación de la Fauna Piscícola (se visita en la parte baja del Parque, e incluye un audiovisual, sobre el ciclo de reproducción de la trucha, el cangrejo y su entorno) conocerá el sistema fluvial, las labores de administración e investigación Piscícola del Gobierno de Aragón.
Las tareas de gestión que se desarrollan en el parque tienen como objetivo la conservación de estos ecosistemas en su estado natural.
El parque está dentro de la red de espacios protegidos de Aragón, declarado paisaje pintoresco desde 1945.
